Their grooming needs may be a bit high-maintenance, but the adorable fluffy coat is worth it if you have the time to spare. Their high levels of intelligence and independence mean they may be difficult to train, but it’s certainly not impossible. Russian Bear Dogs are very active outdoors, but typically quiet in the house (although they may make a fuss about visitors). While they worked for centuries to protect property and fend off predators like wolves and coyotes, today they are primarily domestic companions and watchdogs. A member of the working group, these pups love to have a job to do. Their distinguishing feature is their fluffy fur, which makes them appear even bigger. ![]() The Caucasian Shepherd comes in several varieties of colors and markings. They’re known for their combination of bold fierceness in the face of a threat and soft kidness around their humans. While they’re not the best at socializing with other dogs, the Russian Bear Dog is mostly bark and is surprisingly affectionate with children and families. These pups are huge, weighing in anywhere from 99-170 pounds and reaching 23-30 inches in height. Records from the first century BC show that they aided the army of Armenian Tsar Tigran II in battle. Russian Bear Dogs are known for their physical prowess and fearlessness. This means several countries and territories of the region are home to these dogs–including Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Daghestan, Osettia, Turkey, Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Iran. These dogs were originally bred in the Kavkaz (“Causcaus”) mountain range of Eastern Europe to defend homes and livestock from predators in ancient times. The “Russian Bear Dog,” “Caucausian Ovcharka,” or Caucasian Shepherd is a breed that’s been around since ancient times. The answer is no–while certain communities may have restrictions on large dogs, Russian Bear Dogs are legal throughout the United States. ![]() Since restrictions exist on many large dog breeds in the U.S., some dog lovers wonder whether Russian Bear Dogs are illegal in America.
